Boutique Heritage Hotel
Breathing Life Into a Cultural Gem
A quiet transformation is taking place inside one of Dublin’s most storied cultural
institutions. One of the historic bedrooms at the United Arts Club—an iconic
gathering place for artists, writers, and performers since 1907—has been
beautifully revived as part of a wider preservation programme. Oriana B were brought in to breathe new life into the guest bedroom.
Located in a graceful Georgian townhouse on Fitzwilliam Street, the Club’s old-world charm has remained largely untouched for
decades—part of its magic, and also its challenge. Oriana B approached the
project with sensitivity and restraint, preserving the character of the space
while gently refreshing it for a new generation of guests.
Taking inspiration from the rich colour palette of Georgian architectural history, we chose to lead with a palette of blue that desaturates across the space at different intervals, punctuated by flashes of burgundy that acts as a strong accent bringing some inspiring creativity to these modest hotel rooms.
“There’s something very special about this building,” said Club Administrator, Philip Monaghan. “What Oriana B has done is a shining example of how thoughtful design can complement and enhance historic heritage."
Working alongside a Grade I conservation architect, we thoughtfully curated the scheme to honour the bones of this Georgian behemoth while also creating a cosy and welcoming space, adding details like tongue and groove wall panelling and ornate mouldings to add some grandeur to this once unloved space.
The furniture chosen is also simple and steeped in historical references. From vintage tall boy dressers to carved wood bobbin detailing and block-printed ikat materials, tactile heritage materials and shapes fill this space with texture without overwhelming the conserved architecture.
“We truly believe that the very individual charm of the building is worth preserving and treasuring” said Alannah Monks, Creative Director at Oriana B. “This was a refresh, not a redesign. Our aim was to honour the spirit of the space, not erase it.”
