What are Sideboards?
Sideboards are long cabinets designed to create a focal point in your room and provide lots of storage. Wooden sideboards are ideal partners to a dining table or in kitchen to provide complementary storage to your kitchen cabinets.
Sideboards cater for the practical needs to life in the most aesthetically appealing way. Large sideboards allow for placement of lamps and the display or ornaments on top.
Sideboards are usually longer than a cabinet starting at about 140 or 150cm. They are usually between 70-90cm tall and offer different combinations of shelves and drawers.
Wooden sideboards are the most timeless yet they can be made more decorative with the addition of a marble top or reeded glass doors.
Where is the best place for a sideboard in my home?
A sideboard is an excellent storage solution in any room while also giving you the chance to add some individuality to your space with unique and personal styling.
Traditionally sideboards are dining room furniture as they make excellent storage for tableware and glassware. But in modern homes they are perfect in and open plan kitchen.
Sideboards also work well in living rooms, where they can act as TV/media units or as room dividers in large open plan spaces when placed behind a sofa.
Sideboards are also excellent choices for large hallways and they can be a better choice than a traditional console, offering more storage and a larger display area.
What is the Standard Size of a Sideboard
Sideboards all come in different sizes, it just depends on what kind of style and size you would want for your space!
Small sideboards: 80 cm to 1.1m wide.
Small sideboards are a great solution for alcoves. Sideboards of this size work well in corners, however anything over 1.1m in a corner will make your space appear uneven to the eye so if you want to go longer then consider going high and adjusting your vision to a bookshelf.
Medium sideboards: 1.2m to 1.6m wide
Medium sideboards are the most common size. They work well in almost any room but work best in dining rooms as they are versatile and practical. Medium sideboards provide ample amount of storage with usually around 2-3 cabinets which is great to organise table and glassware.
Large sideboards: 1.6m to 2m+ wide
Large sideboards work great in open plan space or rooms with high ceilings as statement pieces. They provide generous multi-functional storage space, a perfect opportunity to add lamps, sculptures or ornaments. Large sideboards work excellently as a focal point for a piece of artwork. For example, styling your large sideboard with big bold lamps on both sides of the sideboard will create a show stopping display perfect for cradling beloved artwork.
